You need to pass the India Patent Agent Examination to become a Registered Patent Agent in India.
This is a professional qualification and a life long qualification. You need to pay maintenance fees for this to remain valid and you can pay for up to 10 years at one time. This will entitle you to draft all necessary papers for filing before the Indian Patent Office.
The exam consists of two papers. Paper I for 150 minutes tests your knowledge of the provisions in Patent Act, Patent Rules. Some provisions of Trademark Act and IPAB Act may also need to be studied
The second paper tests your skills in writing Patent Documents. These are advices to clients, preparing formal applications in prescribed forms for filing in the patent office, fees to be paid for them etc. In addition you also have to draft a patent application based on an invention disclosure.
The written exam is followed by a Viva Voce the next day.

The passing score is a minimum of 50% in each and an aggregate of 180 marks in all three combined.

You will receive the following when the course starts.
1. A user name and password to access the Patent Agent Exam Training Tutorial.
The tutorial will consist of Patent Act, Patent Rules, Patent Forms, Manual of Patent Practice and Procedure, Past Question Papers and their Answers, Important Sections and Rules from which questions are bound to be asked. This text material is written in simple English as far as possible and without using legal language as far as possible.
The sections, Rules and Forms will consist of Text material, Audio of the text and Video of the text. You view the video first, listen to the audio and then study the text material and answer the few questions asked from the particular section. We have devised the system in such a way that only after you correctly complete one section you can go to the next section. And only when you complete the Act, you can go to the Rules.
You will also receive an e-book with the above subjects in the text format so that you can have a back up in your computer if there is a problem in Internet connection or if our server is down. You can print out the material and have them spiral bound in three or four files and available handy for you.
You can download the audios of the course material and I encourage you to buy an MP3 player and listen to the audio as much as possible.

The coaching classes run for about 75 days or one day before the examination whichever is later.
The training for you will consist of not only this material. There will hardly be any difference between us and other courses if we stop here
You will have to write, we repeat write two tests per week in the starting phase and 3 tests per week in the second month and write 4 tests per week in the third phase and 5 tests per week from the 4th phase onwards. Each phase will be for 2 weeks.
From the 45th day you will start learning patent drafting and patent documentation like Assignment, Licensing, writing opinions etc and you will start writing them
What do I mean by write the tests? Why do I insist on your writing rather than emailing me?
Many of us have lost the need to write on a paper. When you go to the Patent Agent examination you have to write fast, think very quickly and write the examination very fast. And you have to write for 5 hours in one day. With the lack of writing, many are not able to write the examination in time and fail. And we are training you to get through and we are going to eliminate all weaknesses that can potentially block you. There is no stopping you from achieving the goal we have set for you and for us.
Out of 75 days we will have written tests and exams for you for 45 days. In addition we will also provide you another 20 writing assignments. You will need to write on a paper and send it to us by courier or fax or you can scan the sheets and email it to me as an attachment if you have a scanner. But the bottom line is that you have to write on paper. Your hands should get the training to write for five hours in one day.
You are not allowed to see the books and you have to write in your own words or preferably memorize the text provided to you and write it. I suggest that you try to memorize the material we provide
Do not worry if you fail initially. If you fail I will ask you to read the section and rule each 10 times. There is absolutely nothing more to worry. Do not feel insulted about this. I want you to be focused on the goal. And that is to memorize the subject matter and be ready to write it whenever you are called on to do so.

The tests will cover the entire subject as we move forward. There will be many revision exams. We will cover the whole subject for you. Your success is our target.
Once we complete the Sections and Rules, we will start covering the Patent Forms and Schedule of Fees and the subject on the basis of Topics as given in Manual of Patent Practice and Procedure. The tests will of course cover it as well.
We will also put you to write the past Examination question papers. You can test yourself if you can write the answers to known question papers within 150 minutes for each paper.
Once we have covered the entire subject, we will tell you to focus on about 150 provisions (both sections and Rules) and the 27 forms and the schedules to the Rules. You will need to have them all in you finger tips. Though the Act and Rules contain about 291 provisions the most important topics are covered by these 150 provisions and questions will come mainly from these provisions whoever sets the question paper. This does not mean that you can ignore others and you would have already mastered all. All I want you to do is to memorize the 150 provisions. And we have rewritten the text in simple English for you to memorize the subject and the audios and videos will help you do that easily.

Remember you are studying for an examination. When you clear it you get a lifelong professional qualification. As you age, you will have more clients, more work and more income. There is no retirement unless you do not want to take work. A lifelong income is assured.
