Bioremediation of environmental contaminants is the process that involves the use of microorganisms, fungi and green plants and its enzymes to return the environment altered by contaminants to its original condition.Some of the processes that are patented are given below.

Patent no: 6,749,660 titled ‘Solid-chemical composition and method of preparation for the anaerobic bioremediation of environmental contaminants coupled to denitrification’ with the abstract: This invention concerns the formulation and preparation of ammonium- and urea-free solid-chemical compositions for the anaerobic bioremediation of environmental contamination using the biological process of denitrification. The composition includes nitrate salts and may also include additional sources of nutrient phosphorus, potassium and trace elements. The use of complex phosphates (i.e., salts of phosphoric acid) is used as a combined binder-nutrient system. The use of complex phosphates in this manner enables the water-based agglomeration of the composition into granular forms in a manner which greatly improves upon the safety of the commonly known "Tennessee Valley Authority" type granulation processes by reducing or eliminating the use of the highly toxic and dangerous chemicals anhydrous ammonia, sulfuric acid, and phosphoric acid.




Patent no: 6,403,364 titled ‘Method for the enhanced anaerobic bioremediation of contaminants in aqueous sediments and other difficult environments’ with the abstract: The present invention discloses the formulation and use of advanced solid-media chemical compositions in the preferred forms of pellets, tablets, capsules, or other similar forms which are designed and intended to enhance the removal of a broad range of recalcitrant organic and inorganic contaminants from a variety of difficult-to-treat environments, in particular, sediments beneath water bodies, by providing an improved means of promoting the anaerobic, biologically mediated degradation, transformation, and/or detoxification of the contaminants. Specific properties of the pellet, tablets, capsules, or other similar forms of the compositions are disclosed which enable the variation in the settling velocity of the compositions and hence the depth to which the compositions will penetrate the underlying contaminated sediments. The compositions comprise carbonaceous co-substrates, inorganic and organic anaerobic electron acceptors, organic and inorganic nutrients to promote the growth of contaminant-degrading microorganisms, and inoculum of naturally occurring microorganisms which act to promote the biodegradation of contaminants.

Patent no: 6,268,206 titled ‘Bioremediation, detoxication and plant-growth enhancing compositions and methods of making and using such compositions’ with the abstract: A composition containing cAMP, cGMP, forskolin, adenylate cyclase or guanylate cyclase and microorganisms is provided to facilitate bioremediation, detoxication and to enhance plant growth in media contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons. Methods to make the composition and apply it to the contaminated media in order to facilitate bioremediation and detoxication of such contaminants are also provided. Patent no: 7,138,059 titled ‘Environmental bioremediation using shell as an electron donor’ with the abstract: A method for in situ bioremediation of contaminants in the environment is described. The method includes adding an electron donor to ground water in an amount sufficient for a microbe in the ground water to use the electron donor for reducing the contaminant into an innocuous derivative thereof. Illustratively, the electron donor contains about 0.1 to 75% by weight of chitin, such as crustacean shell, partially deproteinized crustacean shell, ground mushrooms, or a fungal fermentation broth. The chitinous electron donor can be added to the ground water as a particulate solid or aqueous slurry.
