Qualifications required appearing in patent bar exam is nothing but a bachelor’s degree in any area science or engineering technology with specialized subjects as the major. An individual with a law degree, but without the proper education or training in science or engineering will not meet the PTO requirements. In these instances, you will need to submit the official transcripts listing every college level course you have taken (copies will not suffice, you need the originals). Additionally, the PTO requires that you actually send in a copy of the appropriate catalog cover along with the pages describing the particular courses you have undergone. It will time for PTO to scrutinize your application forms.
In addition to the technical requirements for the patent bar exam, the PTO expects you to establish "good moral character and respute". Once established, you must sign an oath agreeing to abide by this character requirement. After you have located and signed all the required paperwork, you will have to pay the fee, which is about $390.00, and send it all in. The PTO has expressed that they will try to evaluate all the applications in about 4 week’s time. Once you have been accepted, you will be given a 90-day window during which time you must schedule and take the exam. Therefore, better begin your preparation before applying for the examinations.
About the examination rules; the computerized Patent Bar Exam will be administered by Prometric and is available for you to take at any point throughout the year. It will consist of a morning and an afternoon session. Each session will last 3 hours and will be composed of 50 multiple choice questions. You will have approximately a 1 hour lunch break between the morning and afternoon session. It is expected that you will have to answer 70% of the questions correctly to pass. You may not bring in any of your own materials to the exam. The testing facility will provide you with an online, searchable version of the MPEP. This will be the only reference material you are allowed to use during the test. The facility will also supply you with paper and a pencil - all papers will be collected before you may leave the examination. The cost of the exam is expected to be as follows; a nonrefundable application fee of $40, a registration examination fee of $200, and a service fee of $150 to the administration facility. The computerized Patent Bar exams are administered by Prometric. After taking the exam, you should learn of your results immediately. You will then be mailed an official score report that will let you know whether you passed or failed.
