Serum free cell culture technique which helps the human race by growing the cell culture in a serum free medium. This technique helps in reducing the usage of bovine serum albumin. Some of the techniques that are patented based on USPTO rules and regulations are given below.
Patent no: 6,833,271 titled ‘Serum-free cell culture media’ with the abstract: Cell culture media containing a sterol such as cholesterol stabilized by surfactant rather than serum products or phospholipid micelles and containing soluble carboxylic acids as fatty acid precursors to satisfy lipid requirements are further enhanced by the presence of alcohols promoting cell growth.
Patent no: 4,560,655 titled ‘Serum-free cell culture medium and process for making same’ with the abstract : A defined serum-free medium that is capable of growing a wide range of suspension and monolayer cells includes a serum substitute composed of fetuin, transferrin, phosphatidylcholine, e.g., 1-oleoyl-2-palmitoyl-phosphatidylcholine, linoleic acid and cholesterol. The medium also includes various inorganic salts, carbohydrates, amino acids, buffering agents, vitamins, and compounds to simulate the natural cell environment.
Patent no: 6,103,529 titled ‘Animal cell culture media comprising peptides derived from rice’ with the abstract: The present invention provides serum-free cell culture media formulations which are capable of supporting the in vitro cultivation of animal cells. The media comprise at least one nutrient of plant derivation, such as at least one plant peptide and/or at least one plant lipid and/or at least one plant fatty acid. The media may further optionally comprise an enzymatic digest or extract of yeast cells. The present invention also provides methods of cultivating animal cells in vitro using these cell culture media formulations. In addition, the media of the present invention can be used for growth of animal cells for virus production. In particular, an animal cell culture medium comprising at least one peptide derived from rice, wherein said animal cell culture medium is completely devoid of animal-derived proteins.
Patent no: 5,888,815 titled ‘Cell cultivation method and medium’ with the abstract The invention relates to a method of cultivating mammalian cells expressing recombinant Factor VIII in a serum-free cell culture medium of the type that normally requires the presence of human serum albumin (HSA) and which is substantially free from fatty acids, fattyacid esters and lipids, but wherein HSA is replaced by at least one glucose or sucrose based polysaccharide having an average molecular weight of from about 10,000 to about 450,000. The invention also relates to such a serum-free cell culture medium.
The reference for this article is Patent no: 4,659,663 titled ‘Methods for isolating cell fusion products’ with the abstract: A method for isolating the fusion product of two cell populations is disclosed. The method involves the introduction of a specific antitoxin into cells of one population while introducing a second specific antitoxin into cells of the second population. After fusing cells of the first population with those of the second population, the fusion product may be selectively isolated on a medium containing an appropriate amount of both first and second toxins. For some applications, it may be appropriate to introduce an antitoxin into only one of the cell populations and isolate the fusion product on a media containing only one toxin.
