Xbox 360 Hdd Repair
July 30th, 2009 | by Ramaswami |If you’re like many Xbox 360 owners around the world, it’s likely you’re looking everywhere you can to find Xbox hard drive repair instructions so you can get back to playing your favorite games ASAP. Luckily for you, Xbox hard drive repair is something that anyone can do from the comfort of their own home with proper instruction.
The first thing you need to do is understand the problem you’re having. The most common being the flashing 3 red lights. This problem is a result of your graphics processing unit (GPU) coming loose due to vibration caused by the motherboard overheating. These vibrations cause the soldering that holds the GPU in place to loosen, eventually causing your Xbox to freeze.
Beware: fixing this problem is relatively easy, but DO NOT follow any old instructions you find on the internet, such as the famous “towel trick” or heating up your unit with a blow dryer. These quick fixes may temporarily work, but they risk permanent damage, and you will be back to having the same problem again in no time.
Here are basic Xbox hard drive repair instructions to stop your unit from freezing:
1. Take your case apart using a fine tip poker. Take the faceplate off and remove the DVD drive carefully. Then unscrew the metal plate beneath.
2. Take the DVD drive out by unplugging the cables.
3. Take the fan and motherboard off.
4. Pry off the X clamp under the heat sink with a poker by popping up the corners. The heat sink will be the big silver box with slits in it.
5. Unscrew the heat sink.
6. Clean the GPU and CPU.
7. Apply arctic silver thermal compound all over the GPU (you can buy this for $1 at any computer supply store) and let it set for 15 minutes.
8. Place 2 nylon washers on each of the screws from the heat sink and put the screws back in the motherboard. Then push the screws up through the motherboard and add 2 more nylons washers to the screws.
9. Put the heat sink on top of the screws, pushing down a little, and screw them in tight.
10. Put everything back together and enjoy your games!
If you follow these Xbox hard drive repair directions, you should have your system up and running within the hour. Enjoy!
